At Beautyflair we love making nails look beautiful, but we also put your nail health first. If your child or teen is under 16 and asking for rubber base overlays, hard gel or nail tips, here’s an easy-to-understand explanation of why these services may struggle to last on younger natural nails and what we recommend.
The main reasons these enhancements don’t last as well on younger nails
1. Nail plates are still developing
Young nails are often thinner, softer and still growing into their adult form. A thin or flexible nail plate doesn’t give a strong, stable base for materials like tips, gel or rubber overlays. This means that there could be early lifting, cracking or chipping.
2. Oilier nail beds and higher moisture
Tweens and Teenagers tend to have oilier skin and nail beds because of hormonal changes. Excess oil and moisture at the free edge and along the cuticle can prevent product from bonding tightly. When the product can’t grab/bond onto the nail properly, the enhancement can lift sooner.
3. Hormones = faster change and sensitivity
Hormonal fluctuations during puberty can cause nails to grow faster, change shape, or become more brittle/peely. Faster growth means gaps form quicker between the overlay and the cuticle area, and the nail set can look “grown out” within days.
4. Lifestyle and activity level
Tweens and Teens are often very active, sports, schoolwork, phones, keyboards, and chores expose nails to bumps and water. This everyday wear-and-tear shortens the life of overlays, tips and gel overlays more than it would on a mature adult nail.
5. Less reliable aftercare
Long-lasting nails depend on careful aftercare: avoid picking, make sure you are using gloves for chores, and follow after care advice. Teen clients may forget or find it hard to follow these routines consistently.
Practical consequences you might see
- Lifting at the cuticle or sides within days
- Peeling or chipping of the overlay
- Shorter time between fills (you’ll need repairs sooner)
- Potential for moisture-related issues
- More frequent repairs – which adds cost and frustration
What we recommend at Beautyflair for clients under-16 to 18
We want to make sure young clients enjoy beautiful nails without harming their natural nails. Here are safer, smarter options:
Safer alternatives
- Classic manicure with regular polish – a fresh, healthy finish that still looks great. We will not paint gel on children under the age of 12. Message us to make this booking.
- Gel overlay On natural nails *only when technician approves – we may offer a rubber base or gel overlay if the nail is healthy and the tween or teen is committed to aftercare.
If a parent and tween or teen still want overlays, tips or rubber base
We’ll do a professional assessment first. If the nail plate, oiliness, and lifestyle look suitable, we may proceed with strict conditions:
- A patch test for product sensitivity (if requested)
- Agreement to a shorter fill schedule (e.g., every 2–3 weeks) or correct removal by one of our technicians
- Parental consent form signed (see policy below)
- Understanding there will likely be more repairs or earlier removal required.
How we protect young nails at Beautyflair
- We assess each client’s nail health before any enhancement.
- We follow best removal and application techniques to avoid unnecessary drilling, thinning or trauma.
- We advise the best treatment for each individual.
Aftercare tips to help any tween or teen get the best out of their set
- Avoid picking or peeling at the enhancements.
- Wear gloves for chores and avoid long exposure to hot water.
- Apply cuticle oil daily to keep the nail plate flexible and healthy.
- Book fills or repairs promptly — don’t wait until major lifting occurs.
- If any redness, pain, unusual odour or swelling appears, come to the salon for inspection, and proper removal

By signing below I acknowledge and agree to the following:
- I understand that the nail plate of clients under 16 is often thinner, oilier, and still developing, which can reduce the longevity of nail enhancements like tips, gel or rubber base overlays.
- I understand that lifting, chipping, or earlier-than-usual repair/removal may occur and that this is more likely in teenagers due to hormonal changes and lifestyle.
- I accept the salon’s recommendation to consider alternatives (classic manicure, gel polish on the natural nail and I understand these options may offer better nail health outcomes.
- If I proceed with a Rubber Gel overlay or tips, I consent to an initial nail assessment by a Beautyflair technician. Based on that assessment the technician may:
- approve the enhancement with conditions (shorter fill schedule, more frequent maintenance), or
- refuse the enhancement if they judge the nail is not suitable.
- I agree to follow aftercare instructions provided by the salon (e.g. daily cuticle oil, avoiding picking, returning for fills on time) and I understand failure to follow aftercare can shorten the life of the set and increase the risk of damage.
- I agree to inform the salon immediately if there is any pain, redness, swelling, unusual odour or other abnormal reaction after the treatment. I understand that persistent lifting or trapped moisture can increase infection risk and I will return to the salon for inspection.
- I confirm that the information provided above is accurate and that I am the legal parent/guardian of the client. I consent to the requested service (subject to the technician’s assessment).
- I understand that while every care is taken to protect the natural nails, the salon cannot guarantee a set’s lifespan or eliminate all risks of damage or early failure with nail enhancements on under-16 nails.
